You don’t need motivation

A man went to the petrol station & got the tank of his car filled completely with petrol. He paid and drove out of the petrol station. He had two choices in front of him. He could take a left & drive until he reached Mumbai, or he could take a right & drive until he reached Delhi. Both the mega-cities were equally far, and the man was full on petrol to drive in any direction. What he did was to roam around in the local market of the place where he was, and after driving for a while his tank was again empty. The man would do this every weekend, and the petrol in his car would get over simply driving in the same city on the same roads that went no where at all.

What does this short incident tell us? The man had all the correct ingredients that would be needed to take him to a bigger destination. He had the mechanism, he had the resources, he had the time, he had the path and he even had the intent to drive. And yet, he reached no where and remained right where he was, going around in notional circles. Once the resource, petrol in this case, was over, he would again fill it up and reach no where again.

This story beautifully illustrates of the impact that motivation creates on a person’s mind. It fills the mind with a lot of energy, to do something. The mind starts looking for options to work on. It looks around at every possible option to spend that energy on. It tirelessly moves around, and slowly & definitely starts losing the energy by going rounds in circles. Finally, the energy is over with the passage of time, and the person remains at the same place were it all started. This is true with 99% participants of any motivational seminar or event or talk.

Motivation is a golden trap. Whenever people feel down, they look for motivation. And motivation serves the purpose. It fills you with energy to carry on. In the new found energy, mind works extra to look for something new. But seldom there is clarity on what that new is! And that is where the actual challenge is.

You don’t need motivation to change something in your current state. You need a Purpose! a Vision! a real Goal! a well defined Target!

Most people assume motivation to be the source of creating a target. They believe that do not have enough energy to reach their destination. However, in reality, after attending motivation workshops & sessions, people want to do something but they still have no idea what it is. As the energy drains out, life becomes the same.

Before taking in any motivation, the first step is writing your vision. It is a simple step, but not so easy.

Vision cannot be written in a single day in a single sitting. It is an evolutionary process. It has to be done on a daily basis, and then only a final clear vision emerges.
